In many cases, your designer or contractor will get permits on your behalf. Remember, as the building/property owner, you are ultimately responsible for complying with all development/building requirements. Failure to obtain Development Permits can result in costly construction delays or force homeowners to remove the work that was already done - and that’s on top of potential legal issues.
The Town of Inuvik would like to remind everyone that starting construction without a Development Permit is against the law. A Development Permit is needed for the following types of development:
- Sheds
- Signs
- Fences
- Decks and porches
- Moving a structure
- Demolition of structure
- Home-based businesses
- Construction, including:
- Additions
- Alterations
- Foundation repairs
- Structural repairs
- New roofs
- Demolition of structure, including;
- Lot fill
- Site Grading
- Backfilling
- Water Drainage
- Land development, including:
- Roads
- Piling
- Drainage
- Culverts and swales
Failure to obtain Development Permits prior to starting construction will result in the following:
- Costly construction delays
- Forced to remove work already completed
- Corporation fines: $100,000 + $5,000 for each offence continues
- Individual fines: $5,000 + $1,000 for each offence continues
WHEN IN DOUBT, it is always best to contact the Development and Planning Department regarding permit requirements.
