Demolition

The Town of Inuvik requires all individuals and businesses to have a permit for moving or demolition of buildings. The requirements are outlined in Town of Inuvik Zoning By-law. A permit must be obtained from the Development and Planning Department, prior to commencing work. Prior to commencing the demolition or moving of a structure, ALL SERVICES MUST BE DISCONNECTED. In the case of the water, Please contact the Public Works Department to schedule the removal, shut-off or turn-on of your water connection.

In addition, a building permit MUST be issued for destination lot before a Moving Permit will be processed unless destination is out of Town; and an application MUST be approved by utility company, telephone company and highway department before Moving Permit will be processed. 

 

Moving 
When moving a building or structure the following are the responsibilities of the person or company to whom the Moving Permit has been issued:
  1. The safe and proper moving of a building or mobile home is encouraged (skidding or dragging of buildings or structures is prohibited);
  2. Ensure sufficient personnel and/or pilot cars to properly control traffic ahead of and behind the moving building to the satisfaction of the Development Officer and the Northwest Territories Highways Department;
  3. Ensure all oversized loads, as determined by the Northwest Territories Highways Department, carry the proper oversize signage; and
  4. Ensure a qualified representative of the utility company is on hand during the course of the move to lift all overhead wires for all over-height buildings or structures 
Demolition
When demolishing a building or structure the following are the responsibilities of the person or company to whom the Demolition Permit has been issued:
  1. Keep the site and surrounding area safe for workmen and general public at all times;
  2. Ensure the safety measures at demolition site are adhered to in accordance with the National Building Code; and
  3. Ensure the Fire Safety is reviewed regularly with the workmen and that they are kept familiar with it.

Refunding Security Deposit

After the building has been demolished or removed, the site must be cleaned-up and all discarded materials and rubbish of any kind removed, as specified in By-law No. 1804: Unsightly Land & Premises By-law]. You must request the refund by visiting the Town of Inuvik, only after the Demolition or move and the site has been inspected by Planning and Development Department. The refund is not automatically sent out.
