The Municipal Enforcement Peace Officers are responsible for enforcement of the Highway Traffic By-law and the Territorial Motor Vehicles Act.

The Municipal Enforcement Peace Officers conduct patrols of the Town to enforce both moving and non-moving violations; and operate RADAR and laser speed detection equipment.

Child Safe Community

The Town of Inuvik is a child safe community. The speed limit within the Town is 35 km/h unless otherwise posted.  During the summer months, the Municipal Enforcement Peace Officers deploy our portable speed sign throughout the community to remind drivers of our speed limits.

Regulations

Some regulations to consider are:

  • All drivers must have a valid driver's licence and all vehicles must have valid registration and liability insurance.
  • Speeding is strictly enforced, with fines of up to $300.
  • Stop signs and red-flashing lights require a complete stop before proceeding into the intersection.
  • Seat belts and child restraint systems are mandatory.
  • Operating a cell phone or other electronic device while driving is prohibited.
  • Vehicles must be in safe mechanical condition.
  • A Municipal Enforcement Peace Officer may issue fines or impound vehicles when a contravention of the By-law or the Motor Vehicles Act has occurred.

For further information, please refer to the Highway Traffic By-law.
