During the early
days of their land claim negotiations, the Inuvialuit
chose the gryfalcon as their symbol. The gryfalcon, which can
be seen across the Arctic tundra from Alaska to Labrador,
is identifiable in white, gray and black phases.
The white gryfalcon
is found within the Inuvialuit Settlement Region. It is
recognized by its heavy build and broad, rapid moving wings.
The gryfalcon
can reach higher sustained speeds than any other bird of
prey. It is the only falcon capable of successful pursuit
from ground level.
The swiftness
of the gryfalcon's direct, open pursuit combined with the
bird's responsiveness to human attention, makes it a bird
worthy of distinction.
