When
Fire Strikes:
GET OUT & STAY OUT!
This is a simple strategy that can save your life!
• You and your
family can survive a fire in your home if you leave quickly and
do not go
back inside until the firefighters have said it is safe to do
so.
• If you have a woodstove at home, remember to clean the chimney on a regular basis, especially if you are burning green or wet wood.
• Be sure to have a Home Escape Plan in place and practice
it often with your family.
• As a family, draw up a floor plan of your home and be
sure to include 2 ways out of
every room (i.e. doors, windows).
• Decide on a meeting place
outside your home where everyone will meet up once
you have escaped.
• Practice home fire drills at least twice a year. Make
it challenging and realistic by
pretending that some exits are blocked and also practice
your escape in the dark.
