CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR TWO INUVIK YOUTH

LOOKING FOR INUVIK YOUTH CULTURAL AMBASSADORS FOR UNIQUE TRAVEL OPPORTUNITY

 

The Town of Inuvik is looking for Expressions of Interest for an opportunity for two Inuvik Youth (& their parent or designated chaperone) Ages 12 to 18 years for a unique travel & learning opportunity from February 26th to March 3rd, 2020 to travel from Inuvik to Vancouver to act as cultural and brand ambassadors for the Town of Inuvik.

Each year the Tourism & Economic Development Department attends consumer and trade shows to market the Town of Inuvik as a unique and alluring travel destination to visitors. This year our team will be attending the Vancouver Outdoor & Adventure Show being held in Vancouver, BC on Saturday, February 29th and Sunday, March 1st. In addition to having a booth at the consumer show, the Town of Inuvik is also hosting a special public event on the evening of February 27th as a way to promote the authentic culture, food, arts, crafts, stories, and experiences of Inuvik and the Western Arctic.

With special thanks to our partner and sponsor airline Air North, we are pleased to be able to extend this very exciting and unique opportunity for two Inuvik youth.

 

WHAT WILL BE PROVIDED:

  • Return Airfare between Inuvik & Vancouver on Air North
  • Hotel in Vancouver & Whitehorse (on return travel)
  • Per Diems (based on Government of Canada travel rates)
  • Town of Inuvik clothing to be worn at events and consumer show
  • Letter of Recommendation after the trip
  • Support and On-the-Ground training and coaching during events & show

 

WHAT WILL BE REQUIRED OF EACH PARTICIPANT:

  • Willing to sign & adhere to a Code of Conduct
  • To work at the Town of Inuvik booth at the Vancouver Outdoor Show each of the two days
  • To work and attend any organized special events & marketing activities scheduled while in Vancouver
  • To be accompanied by a Parent or Designated Chaperone
  • Appropriate & Current Travel ID & Documents including a Signed Letter from a Legal Guardian that they have permission to be travelling (should a legal guardian not be the designated chaperone)
  • A final presentation about their experience for Inuvik Town Council

 

DESIRED QUALITIES OF YOUTH CANDIDATES:

  • Demonstrated interest in tourism, hospitality, and/or welcoming visitors as a local host and community champion
  • Must be willing to answer questions regarding Inuvik including topics such as weather, geography, wildlife, culture, traditions, customs, clothing, and outdoor experiences
  • Must be willing to speak openly and proudly about their families, culture, heritage, and community
  • Must be willing to help where needed (stocking brochures, passing out donuts, setting-up and taking down of booth materials)

 

DESIRED QUALITIES OF PARENTS & CHAPERONES:

  • Must be willing to answer questions regarding Inuvik
  • Must be willing to speak openly and proudly about their families, culture, heritage, and community
  • Must be willing to support the Town of Inuvik staff & attending Youth with event and consumer show activities
  • Although the opportunity is for Youth, we are looking for adults that also have intimate knowledge of local arts, crafts, culture, traditional skills, country food, wildlife, stories and more and that may be willing to share this knowledge in a public forum

 

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST MUST INCLUDE:

  • A short bio about themselves and why they feel they would be an ideal candidate. This can be submitted in various forms including short essay, detailed poster, short video or other creative means.
  • Letter of Support from an Adult Inuvik resident. This could include (non-family member) teachers, coaches, mentors, pastors, Elders, Indigenous governments, local leaders or others who have direct experience working alongside the Youth

 

SELECTION PROCESS:

  • Submission of initial Expressions of Interest are due no later than 5pm on Friday, January 31st. These can be emailed or dropped in person at the Town Office
  • All interested Youth & their designates must attend an info night on Monday, February 3rd at 5:15 pm in Town Council Chambers on the second floor of the Town Office
  • Selection & notification of successful candidates will be by 5pm on Friday, February 7th
