Posted on Friday May 31, 2019

PUBLIC NOTICE

UPDATE – NATURAL GAS LEAK

UPDATE AS OF 5:15PM FRIDAY, MAY 31ST, 2019

Inuvik Gas has confirmed that the ruptured gas line has been repaired.

Gas services to the downtown core have been reestablished.

We thank all business owners and members of the public for their cooperation.

BACKGROUND

At 10:30 a.m. on May 31, 2019 Inuvik Fire, Inuvik Municipal Enforcement, Inuvik RCMP and Inuvik Gas responded to a gas leak at an Office Building/Storefront on Mackenzie Road.

Construction operations at the building ruptured a gas line.

As a precautionary measure, all buildings in the immediate area were safely evacuated and the road was closed.  The gas distribution system to the downtown core was shut off, to prevent further release.

All buildings were cleared, monitored for gas levels and made safe by 11:20 a.m. and all occupants were allowed to resume operations shortly thereafter.

There were no injuries reported.

As of 12:16 p.m., the gas distribution in the downtown core remains disabled until the line can be capped or repaired.

It is anticipated that it will be restored later this afternoon.

On behalf of all the Emergency Response Agencies, we would like to applaud and acknowledge the building occupants and general public for their orderly compliance with the evacuation order.  Their cooperation assisted us in focussing on mitigating the incident safely and efficiently.
