PUBLIC NOTICE: Inuvik Pound is at Capacity

Posted on Thursday September 22, 2022

PUBLIC NOTICE

September 22, 2022

ATTN: INUVIK ANIMAL OWNERS

INUVIK POUND IS AT CAPACITY

The Pound has been at capacity for the past 4 months, with some dogs being there for over 3 months.

The shelters in the South are overwhelmed.  They are not intaking any animals from the North.

In the past week we have had to capture or intake 6 animals. Today we have responded to 4 dogs at large in town. We have no more room in the pound.

As a result, we cannot take any surrenders at this time.

We are asking the pet owners in Inuvik to please help us and be responsible, to reduce the number of emergency calls we get and the number of animals we intake into our pound.

Spay/Neuter Your Animal

  • Surgeries are available throughout the year in partnership with Arctic Paws.
  • This reduces the hormonal behaviour in male dogs.
  • This also reduces the trouble of having to find homes for puppies that become unwanted dogs when they reach adulthood.

Be Proactive

  • If your dog gets loose, contact Municipal Enforcement immediately, post on social media, go out and try to find them. This will save you costly impound fees.

Be Respectful of Others

  • Keep your dog tethered while outside or on a leash when walking.
  • Yes, we know your dog is a good dog, but there are people genuinely afraid of dogs and there are dogs that feel threatened while on a leash when other dogs run up to them.

Shelter and Provide Basic Needs to Outside Dogs

  • There are many times when we receive a complaint to assess whether a dog is being neglected outside and for its own safety, must be removed.
  • If you choose to have your dog outside, or if your dog chooses to be outside, please ensure that they have adequate food, water, shelter that provides shade, cover and insulation

Please consider local adoptions.  If you wish to foster or adopt a dog, contact Municipal Enforcement.

We have resources available to you if you need help being a responsible pet owner.

We have collars and leads; we can offer suggestions for building a shelter.
