PUBLIC NOTICE: Vacant, Derelict, & Unsightly Properties and Abandoned Vehicles - Targeted Enforcement Effective Immediately

Posted on Monday June 05, 2023

VACANT, DERELICT AND UNSIGHTLY PROPERTIES AND ABANDONED VEHICLES

Effective Immediately   -   June 5, 2023

The Town of Inuvik is conducting a targeted enforcement of the following bylaws (click the links):

2655-PS-Vacant and Derelict Property Bylaw

2656-HS-20-Unsightly-Land-Premises-By-law

We remind all property and vehicle owners that it is their responsibility to maintain a safe property that does not pose a risk to public health, safety, or is unsightly.

Priorities will be in order of:

  1. properties that pose a risk to public health or safety,
  2. abandoned vehicles,
  3. properties that are derelict, unsightly, or overrun with garbage, debris, furniture (couches/mattresses)

Who is Responsible? The Owner

If you are the registered owner of a property or vehicle that has been identified, you will be responsible for the cleanup, removal and any related fines or fees. This also includes if you are a landlord of a property. You will still be held responsible.  If you sold your car to someone and they didn’t register it, you are still responsible, unless you can provide valid proof of sale.

What will happen?

  1. A list of abandoned, derelict, and unsightly properties or vehicles has been generated.
  2. The registered owner will be contacted and provided direction to remove or remediate identified concerns.
  3. Depending on the nature of the concern, the owner may have anywhere from 3 days to 60 days to complete the required actions, including potential fines.
  4. If a registered owner takes no reasonable steps to address the concern, within the given timeframe, they will be fined and will continue to be subsequently fined for noncompliance to the relevant Bylaw until the concern is remedied.
  5. If the registered owner cannot be located or contacted, or if the registered owner does not remedy a concern that is a risk to public safety,  the town of Inuvik will take steps to remedy the concerns.  If this occurs, the registered owner will be fined, the cost of this remediation will be billed to the registered owner and if those fines, fees, and costs are not paid, they will be applied to the property taxes.
