Roads and sidewalks

Roads and sidewalks are maintained by the Town, with levels of service determined by municipal policies, budgets and priorities. The level of service is done in accordance with the Territorial-mandated minimum maintenance standards. Those standards require regular patrols be done to check for such things as missing traffic control signs, areas of the road needing maintenance, etc.

The Town of Inuvik does not maintain all sidewalks.  Property owners and occupants are reminded that they are responsible to clear the sidewalks abutting their properties as per the Highway Traffic By-law. This includes removing snow, ice, dirt and other obstructions.  We would like to thank everyone in advance for your cooperation in keeping Inuvik’s sidewalks clear and safe for everyone.

Typically, funds are allocated through the operating budget for road maintenance work which includes hot-mix patching, cold patching, asphalt heat sealing and crack sealing. Through the Public Works Department, the construction of additional sidewalks have become a key priority with yearly funding to construct new sidewalks and the rebuilding and repairing of existing ones. 

Our Public Services team over the summer of 2015 replaced and constructed over 900m of sidewalks, in addition to installing over 15 bear proof blue bins to deter bears from coming into town. In addition, we were also able to complete two playgrounds, install dog litter bins around the parks and playgrounds and rebuilt King Road and Duct Road.

• maintenance, potholes, curbs and road right-of-way
• grading gravel roads and shoulders
• ditching
• roadside grass mowing
• brushing and grubbing
• application of dust suppressants on gravel roads
• asphalt patching
• line marking
• curb repairs
• debris and litter pick-up

Street Lights

The Town of Inuvik is responsible for the maintenance of street lights. That maintenance is performed by the Northwest Territories Power Corporation on the Town's behalf.

Some maintenance is routinely performed each year. However, most roads are scheduled for maintenance only as required. Deficiencies reported by the public are repaired on a priority basis. If you have any questions about maintenance, please contact the Infrastructure Department.
