Mayor's message - February - Indigenous Language Month

Posted on Monday January 29, 2024

"I want to remind everyone about the importance of Indigenous Language Month to our community of Inuvik. February is not just a calendar event; it is a celebration, a recognition, and a commitment to preserving the very essence of who you are as a people.

Inuvik, is a town with a rich cultural tapestry woven by generations of Indigenous people. Your languages are more than just a means of communication; they are the carriers of your stories and the living connections to your ancestors and the land we all call home.

First and foremost, Indigenous Language Month is crucial for the preservation of cultural identity. Your languages are the keepers of ancient wisdom, traditional knowledge, and a unique way of understanding the world. In celebrating your languages, you celebrate the very foundation of what makes you Inuvialuit, Gwich'in, or any of the distinct Indigenous groups that call Inuvik home."

Clarence Wood, Mayor
