The Municipal Enforcement Peace Officers are responsible for administering and enforcing the Passenger Transportation By-law. The By-law regulates taxis, buses and other passenger transportation vehicles within town.

All taxis operating within the Town of Inuvik must be licenced. The driver is required to display his or her Taxi Owner/Operator Permit and the current taxi fare rate sheet.

Taxi fares within the community are specified in the By-law, the current fare rates are available on the Taxi Fare Rate document.

Accessible Taxis

The Town of Inuvik has 2 licensed taxi companies. Both companies are required to have an accessible taxi available for passengers who require mobility aids between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., and on a pre-booked basis after hours. The fare rate for an accessible taxi is the same rate as a regular taxi; no additional fees are permitted to be charged for passengers who require the use of mobility aids.

Some regulations to consider are:

  • Smoking or open liquor is not permitted in a passenger transportation vehicle at any time.
  • A driver may refuse a passenger who is abusive or disorderly.
  • Taxi drivers must provide a fare receipt upon request.
  • Drivers must be respectful and not use abusive or insulting language.
  • Taxi service is required to be available on a 24/7 hour basis.
  • Drivers of passenger transportation vehicles must be licensed with the town and the vehicle must be approved.
  • A Municipal Enforcement Peace Officer may issue a fine to any person who is contravention of the By-law.
