There have been some recent changes in our Bylaw department:
NAME CHANGE
The “Bylaw” department is known as the Municipal Enforcement Division. The Town of Inuvik employs two full-time Municipal Enforcement Peace Officers, reporting to the Director of Protective Services.
TITLE CHANGE
Constables are now known as Peace Officers.
This title encompasses definitions under the various pieces of municipal and select territorial legislation, such as Municipal Bylaws, the Motor Vehicles Act, the Dog Act or the All Terrain Vehicle Act.
SAME SERVICES
The Peace Officers’ authority, powers and services have not changed.
The mandate of our Peace Officers is:
"to foster a safe and liveable community through public education and impartial enforcement".
Our services include:
• Public Safety Education
• Municipal By-law Enforcement
• Traffic Enforcement – ATV enforcement, moving and stationary traffic
• Animal Control – Including operating a non-kill pound facility
• Taxi Regulation
• Enforcement of select Territorial laws
LOGO CHANGE
Our crest has changed to better reflect the role of a Peace Officer. This includes any markings on official documents, vehicles and uniforms.
HIRING STANDARDS
The minimum hiring requirement to become a Peace Officer for the Town of Inuvik is a 2 year law enforcement diploma or 2 years of law enforcement experience. In addition to this experience, all Peace Officers are required to maintain certification in various aspects of enforcement and service standards.
